A new faith

"And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him." Colossians 2:6

Gertrude, a mother of three lives in Nazon, a poor neighbourhood in the west of Haiti. Her husband, Junior, works in a small food business they started together. Gertrude used to believe in voodoo spirts and people in the community would come to her for healing.

Despite the money she received from those who came to her, Gertrude’s life became miserable. She wanted a way out, but felt trapped. She didn’t know what to do.

Gertrude’s friend, Ginette, told her about a Compassion Child Survival project that was helping mothers. Gertrude visited the local church where the project was based and found she qualified to be registered.  “It was a great privilege for me when I was registered at the Child Survival Project with my daughter, Junia. Change came into my life. My first gift was a Bible,” explains Gertrude.

“Every time I had the chance to participate in the project activities, the staff would always tell me about Jesus, how He died for me on the cross to wash away my sins; and that really touched my heart. They continued to read the Bible with me during the home visits until I understood that God was the solution to my problems.’’

At one of the monthly meetings, Gertrude decided to give her life to Jesus.

Since then, she regularly attends church with her children, and sometimes her husband. “I am so grateful for what God has done in my life. I want to thank Compassion and the staff for all the support and love they have shown for me and my daughter. I am willing to serve God until the end of my life.”
