The latest reports from Honduras of dengue fever and chikungunya are in the in the northern part of the country. Almost 7,000 people have now been affected. Of these, there are 108 new cases amongst Compassion sponsored children.

Many church partners are affected and the CDI Jehova Nisi is temporarily closed due to the extent of illness amongst staff and children.

Chikungunya is characterised by a fever frequently accompanied by joint pain. The joint pain is often very debilitating, but usually only lasts for a few days although it may be prolonged to weeks.

Most patients recover fully, but in some cases joint pain may persist for several months or even years. Occasional cases of eye, neurological and heart complications have been reported, as well as gastrointestinal complaints. Serious complications are not common, but in older people, the disease can contribute to the cause of death.

Chikungunya virus was first diagnosed in Tanzania and until very recently was only found in Africa and Asia. The first outbreak of the disease in the Americas was confirmed in December 2013.

There is no vaccine or cure for the disease and treatment focuses on relieving the symptoms of the disease.
