Pastor Josefina has dedicated her life to serving children living in poverty. Born in the province of Higuey in the Dominican Republic, Josefina’s childhood was extremely difficult. After the death of her father she moved from six different homes. While some were happy places, others exposed her to abuse, neglect and embarrassment. This gave Josefina a passion to serve vulnerable children, and ensure their childhood is different to her experience.
Today, Josefina is the pastor of a church in Campo Lindo. This is one of the poorest communities in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The church where Josefina serves is one of the nearly 7,000 churches that partner with Compassion around the world.
When Josefina was a child, it was a miracle if her family could put breakfast on the table. For this reason, food is very important to her. Josefina has formed good relationship with businesses in the community and receives donations of food, household items and toys which she helps distribute to the most vulnerable. Watching her walk down the streets of Campo Lindo, you can’t fail to miss her love and passion for the children and community. She knows each child by name and calls out to them, giving a smile or a hug. Her progress down the street is slow, as she makes enquires about parents, stops to pray for people, or gives out an invite to the next church event.
Over the years Josefina has had different health problems, but nothing will stop her from serving her community. She explains, “We must never think of giving up. We must always strive for our dreams, because when the Lord puts a dream in us, in our hearts, He also supports and accompanies us and opens the doors. No matter how difficult things may appear, no matter if we have to start from zero again, we must trust that if He planted this little seed in our hearts, it will grow.”
Prayer:
