Dartford church travels to Ethiopia

Church leaders from Dartford, Woolwich and Sittingbourne’s Net Church, along with members of their congregations, have just returned from Ethiopia where they visited their sponsored children.

“I have been supporting Genet for two years now. Meeting her took the sponsorship to another level. I could see her and hear her first hand. I got to ask questions about her health and schooling to people who know her best,” reflects Andrew Jackson, Net Church’s Youth Pastor.

Two years ago, Net Church launched a partnership with Compassion UK, a Christian child sponsorship charity, and now sponsors over one hundred children through Compassion’s sponsorship programme.

Even though this was the first time we met the children we had been supporting, it was never awkward and before long we were laughing and playing together. The experience definitely taught me a lot and reminded me how distorted my priorities had got.”

The children that attend Compassion projects receive an education and are given access to nutrition, medical care and emotional support. Compassion works with over 1.7 million children like Genet around the world. Working in partnership with the local church, they seek out the most vulnerable children and, with the support of individual sponsors, provide them with the means to break the cycle of poverty and create a viable future.

It was wonderful to watch the children find their sponsors and observe the bonding that comes after the writing of letters,” reflects Tim Robertson of Compassion UK who hosted the trip. “It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the tremendous needs of children in the developing world. Compassion offers a very practical and meaningful way for people to make a difference to the life of a child in poverty by sponsoring them for just £25 per month.”

Net Church are aiming to sponsor 200 children in Ethiopia by Christmas.
